How do I get these errors to stop showing up and to get the homepage to come up?!?!?!

I'm getting the same error on an install for a client. I've installed it three different times using two version of oscommerce...all with the same result. I echoed out $language, and to see what it was set to, and it's blank. So, somewhere, that variable isn't getting set.
This is all quite strange to me, because I have a shop of my own running, and I never encountered this problem. It installed and has run without a single problem. I'm guess it's my client's server--some cheap shared server.
Any help from anyone would be appreciated!
