I had the "Step 2" issue as reported by other users, but have gotten past, and now I am stuck at the screen "New Installation osCommerce Configuration". I get the following error:

The configuration files do not exist, or permission levels are not set.

* cd xxx/catalog/includes/
* touch configure.php
* chmod 706 configure.php

I followed those instructions, and even chmod'd 777, but I still get the same error. I have removed the old configure.php file, which it promptly recreated, and generated the same error.

What do I need to do?

I have been told that you may need to change the file permissions through your control panel as they may be changing back to read only.......... I, myself have not had these issues with file permissions but some do with some servers.

What control panel? I SSH into the box, and follow those instructions.

Here is what a directory listing looks like for:

-rwxrwxrwx 1 xxx xxx 1935 Jun 12 20:54 configure.php

So, as far as I can tell, it's doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing.

Any ideas?

Ok, SO I am assuming nobody has any idea how to help me?

I suppose I will seek another solution, since Os Commerce doesn't seem to have any way to support even an installation.

Your download came with a documentation.pdf. If you can not read it and or understand it you should seek the documentation online here
http://www.oscommerce.info/

and here.

http://www.oscommerce.info/docs/english/ta...f_contents.html

and here

You have server issues and not oscommerce issues and those permission issues will not go away by switching to different software.

Wow, what a great community this is. I can't believe I am here asking for help, and this is the kind of response I am getting. Very classy.

Well at least I'm getting a response, however misguided.

Ok, so you are telling me I am having server issues. What issues? Give me some specifics. There is no message other than one that says I have a permissions issue.

I did read the documentation that was included with the download. There is very little in terms of troubleshooting installation problems in the documentation.

On a post above I posted the directory permissions on the file, and asked what else could be the problem. Nobody responded. And you are only directing me to the documentation. That's not particularly helpful.

If you have some valuable advice, other than RTFM, I would appreciate it.

I came to this forum with a problem, and I assumed, as this is an OPEN SOURCE program that the spirit of open source was prevalent here. Instead, I find that I am told to read the book, and don't let the door hit you in the ass. What the hell kind of reception for a new user of your software is that?

I had installation issues, and was asking for help. A lot of other users are doing the same thing, and appear to be receiving a more receptive response. Perhaps you guys don't like it pointed out to you when you aren't really being helpful?

Or maybe you really don't care who actually uses this program since it's open source, and you aren't getting paid to support it?

This is more akin to an experience with Microsoft technical support... the only difference is they would make me pay for the experience of being treated like an asshole instead of getting it for free.

Thanks for all the help guys.

What do I need to do?

do a manual installation of osC, extract the osc files upload them to the server and import the osc stock database with phpmyadmin. Finally you need edit the configure.php files to match the server settings.

Use the latest osc from here

Thank you for your post.

I will try all these things, and get back to you.

Thanks enigma1.
