I cant get the status to move from 'preparing' [paypal ipn]

The money from paypal gets transferred into my account but the ipn isnt talking to my store.

I am not using SSL, does this matter? the contrib docs say it should would without ssl aslong as cURL lib is installed on my server.

My installation said that cURL was indeed installed.

My host is fasthosts, im using the linux hosting package.

I have set the file permissions accordingly and can get the blank page mentioned in the documentation by pointing my browser to ext/modules/payment/paypal_ipn/ipn.php

I also have a php.ini in that dir turning register_globals on.

Ive searched and searched on here but the only relevant solutions seem to be aimed at people using godaddy hosting

Im getting really sick of this annoyance ive been up all night trying to figure it out. Any help would be great.

update on this. I emailed fasthosts about cURL just to make sure it was active. It is and it doesnt require a proxy to connect to it. So surely my IPN should work ok right?

In Your paypal profile did You set IPN to on.
Also is the path for IPN ok and the permission for IPN set proper.

Place a file write code in the IPN file and chek what all is coming the IPN way.
