Using Paypal standard...buyer is presented with a login page, where they can log in or click an insignificant link, easy to miss, that lets them pay without an account. Can I change this at all ?

No, you can't. I spoke with paypal about that, explaining it is a problem for many shops, but was told they to it that way since they want people to create accounts. All you can do is put a note on your checkout page before the customer goes to paypal explaining that they don't have to have a paypal account to use it and provide breif instructions on that.

Thanks Jack...figured as much. too bad as the link to pay without an account is so small in comparison to the login box. I've already had6 people complain that they didnt want to set up paypal accounts andthe site has only been live for 2 days ! Ah well...

What about Website Payments Pro (If you are in UK or US) ??? That will allow your customers to pay by credit/debit card directly on your website, if they dont want to set up a paypal account.
